Frequently asked questions
How do I get help or report an issue?
Raise a request with us through the Support Portal.
Where do we get our data from?
We believe location data must be reliable and trustworthy to ensure you can make informed business decisions. We receive our data from Commonwealth, state and territory agencies and other trusted location data providers. Â
Can you fix my address?
Geoscape is not a creator of addresses. We aggregate address data from a range of contributors. Addressing starts at the local government level, so we encourage you to raise your address issue with your relevant agency. In some cases, we may be able to assist. If you would like to speak to us directly about your address issue, you can contact us.
Do you have sample data available for evaluation?
Yes. You can download our Geoscape sample data anytime. While you’re there, you can also check out our visualisation of the Geoscape sample data. Explore what the spatial data looks like in our interactive map.
If you want to try our API products, we have a Freemium subscription available at our Geoscape Developer portal.
What area does Geoscape data cover?
Geoscape data covers the entire Australian land mass and offshore islands. It does not include other international areas.
How long does it take for a new address to appear in Geoscape address products?
Addresses are created or changed by local authorities. These addresses make their way through processes at various levels of government, before they reach Geoscape. Geoscape receives addresses from contributors on an ongoing basis and feeds them through a production process. The address data in our APIs is continuously updated. For G-NAF, they enter a 13-week production cycle for quarterly updates.
Does your data have any personal information?
Geoscape data does not contain any personal information identifying individuals or businesses.
Who is the authority for addresses in Australia?
In most cases, there is no one primary custodian of addressing in Australia. The validation and authorisation of an address generally rests with local governments or other government departments that manage land, with general input from property developers. The state and territory land agencies have a responsibility to collate and keep a concise record of all addresses, but only for their jurisdictions. There is no federal legislation to form a consistent specification of addressing nationally.
